How to Improve Your Negative Self-Talk?

Have you noticed the inner voice in your head that is constantly chatting away?

This inner monologue can either be like a supportive coach, boosting your confidence and performance with positive comments, or it can be like a critical and negative mother-in-law, sabotaging your success with harsh criticism.

It's been shown that our inner monologues can significantly impact our behaviour in both positive and negative ways (source).

Self-talk, or the inner dialogue we have with ourselves, can have a huge impact on our overall well-being and mindset. Negative self-talk can lead to negative emotions and behaviors, while positive self-talk can boost our confidence and help us cope with challenges.

 

Here are nine ways to change the script of your self-talk and use your inner voices to achieve your goals, build confidence, and perform better.

 

1. Speak only kind words to yourself

Practice self-compassion and kindness. Treat yourself with the same care and understanding that you would offer to a good friend. This can include being patient with yourself, speaking kindly to yourself, and taking breaks when needed.

 

2. Set healthy boundaries

Set boundaries and learn to say no when needed. It's important to prioritize your own needs and well-being.

3. Nourish your body

Engage in activities that nourish your body and mind, such as exercise, hobbies, and self-care routines.

4. Surround yourself with positivity

Surround yourself with positive and supportive people who respect and value you.

5. Focus on the opportunity

Learn to forgive yourself for mistakes and failures and focus on the learning opportunity. No one is perfect, and it's important to let go of negative self-judgment. 

6. Be mindful of your circumstances

Practice gratitude and focus on the good things in your life. Practice mindfulness and being present in the moment. This can help you to be more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and help you to practise gratitude and focus on the good things already in your life. 

7. Challenge negative self-talk

Learn to recognize and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs about yourself. This can involve identifying negative thought patterns and replacing them with more positive and realistic ones.

8. Learn a new skill

Seek out new experiences and challenges that allow you to grow and learn. Find ways to express yourself creatively, whether through art, writing, music, or other mediums.

9. Lastly, if you are struggling with low self-esteem or other mental health issues long-term, seek professional help.

A therapist or counselor can provide valuable support and guidance on your journey towards self-love.
